Google attempt to take over the Internet
Remember Smart Tags? Maybe not - well this was a scheme that Microsoft attempted to put into place a few years ago, but backed out because of trust and trademark concerns. The scheme let Microsoft 'hijack' webpages by inserting links into the pages which took users to Microsoft or advertisers web properties.Google's new scheme 'autolinking' was actually created by the same person, and Google seem to think that they are going to get away with this very same crap.
To be affected, you need to have a Google toolbar installed, and be in the US, apparently. Outrage has already begun and you can see examples of autolinking posted by furious webmasters here.
The story has just hit the BBC. I for one am outraged, disgusted, appalled and annoyed by this latest development from Google. Just who do they think they are?
