Search engines and Directories are the virtual librarians of the Web, since they provide people with an interface to find the information that they are interested amongst those billions of documents.
People use Search engines and Directories to navigate through the billions of websites on the Web and to find the information or products which they are interested in.
For Example
If someone is interested in finding a mortgage on the Web then they might go to Google or another major search engine / directory and search for websites that are about "mortgages". These searchers are hot prospects for a company that sells mortgages since they are actively seeking information or services pertaining to the keyword "mortgages". See screen shot below:

There are two seperate types of results shown in the above screenshot:
>> Google Adwords (highlighted in pink): sponsored listing based where results are based upon how much the advertiser is willing to pay
>> Natural Listings (highlighted in yellow): based upon what Google's ranking algorithm rates as relevant, these results can be manipulated using search engine optimisation
